SUTHERLAND, (Neb) KNOP - Sutherland Fire and Rescue Volunteer Nick Walters will have surgery Saturday morning on his ankle after he was in a Friday afternoon motorcycle accident.

Walters flipped his bike south of Sutherland after getting into some gravel around 3:19 p.m., Friday. Assistant Chief of Sutherland Fire and Rescue Roger Lathrop said Walters got to going sideways and could not correct in the gravel before flipping into the ditch.

Walters will undergo surgery at Great Plains Health at 8 a.m. Saturday to place pins and screws in his right ankle. Chief Lathrop said they had to pull Walters' wrist (which was also injured) three inches to get it back in place.

Chief Lathrop said Walters has been in a lot of pain since the accident. He said, "It's kind of a weird feeling to be called to an accident have have it be a friend. I saw his bike and him lying in the ditch. You just do what you have to do. It's not something you want to see."

Walters underwent other tests at Great Plains Health to make sure he had no additional injuries.

"He will be down for awhile," said Chief Lathrop.
