World War Two Army Veteran, Honored by Gage County Board
Gage County honors war veteran who served in the Philippines, during World War Two

BEATRICE – The Gage County Board honored another of the county’s heroes today in an ongoing effort to recognize the dedication of the area’s armed services veterans.
Harm Huls served in the U.S. Army, enlisting in June of 1942. He was an instructor on the 15-caliber machine gun and trained to be a gunner on reconnaissance vehicles. The private first-class received his training in California, Texas, Mississippi and Washington State, before being shipped out to Hawaii…on an eight-day trip over rough seas.
Gage County Veterans Service Officer Phil Dittbrenner spoke of Huls’ role while in the service....unloading ships for six months, then being sent to the Philippines to a secure staging area for the invasion of Japan.
Huls was honorably discharged from the Army at Fort Logan, Colorado, February 4th of 1946. He earned seven medals for his service in the Army.
The 98-year-old Huls been a lifelong resident of Gage County. Huls’ family members attended the recognition, where he was presented with a plaque and some gifts for his service to his country and Gage County.
