The Iraqi military says three rockets were fired at the airport.
According to the PMF and an Iraqi security source rockets hit two vehicles that belong to PMF.
Iraqi state TV reports a senior official in Iraq's paramilitary forces was also killed by the shelling.
The total number of people killed is unclear.
The US says Soleimani "was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region."
