KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney Public Schools announced that Trent Steele has accepted the position of assistant principal for college and career readiness at Kearney High School. He will begin the role in fall 2026.

Steele will lead and expand the school’s college and career readiness programming, including support for career pathway exploration, postsecondary planning and student transitions after graduation.

His responsibilities will also include oversight of internships, cooperative education, job shadowing and field experiences.

“Dr. Trent Steele brings an exceptional combination of leadership experience, student-centered decision-making and a deep understanding of guiding students toward their next step,” said Jeff Ganz, principal of Kearney High School. “His background in building-level administration, student services and human resources, along with his connection to Kearney, will benefit our students, staff and families. He will also support continued improvement in our career and technical education programs, student organizations and community partnerships.”

Steele previously served Kearney Public Schools as a Kearney High School teacher from 1995 to 1998 and as an assistant principal from 2005 to 2011.

His experience also includes leadership roles across Nebraska, including assistant principal positions at Gretna High School and Papillion La Vista South High School, as well as human resources and student services director for Papillion La Vista Community Schools.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to Kearney High School and serve students in an area that is important to me,” Steele said. “Helping students graduate with a clear plan and confidence in their future is essential, and I look forward to working with the KHS team to strengthen those supports.”

Steele holds a doctorate in educational administration and has experience in instructional leadership, academic and behavioral interventions, school culture and policy development. His background also includes legal training.

Steele and his wife, Karla, have two children, Bennett and Kitt.
