Norfolk officer, another driver seriously injured in Sunday morning crash

Two people, including a Norfolk Police officer, are seriously hurt after an early morning crash on Sunday.

NORFOLK, Neb. — Two people, including a Norfolk Police officer, are seriously hurt after an early morning crash on Sunday.

It happened around 5:00 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 81 and 829 Road on the northeast edge of Madison. The police department says the officer was transporting an arrestee to the Madison County Jail. The officer was driving southbound and slowing to make a turn when a pickup hit the cruiser from behind. Ambulances transported both drivers to a local hospital before they were transported to Omaha hospitals for further treatment. The arrestee was treated and released.

The police department didn’t release the name of the officer or the other driver.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Madison County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident. Police say it’s possible that criminal charges will be filed.

This was the second serious accident on Highway 81 near Madison in a 24-hour stretch.
