'Heroes for Hunger' just under halfway to donation goal after day one
HASTINGS, Neb. – After enduring an entire night alone on a rooftop, KHAS Radio's Brandon J McDermott remains atop the four-story Burlington Center building to raise awareness and donations for food insecurity.
The 'Partyline' morning show host began his three-day rooftop stay Tuesday morning, part of the 'Heroes for Hunger' promotion, which aims to collect food items to be donated to Hastings-area food banks.
"I got to bed about 11 o'clock, and of course the sounds of the town, motorcycles speeding down, trains passing, and phantom sounds on the roof woke me up about three o'clock (a.m.) and I didn't get to bed after that." said McDermott.
After day one of collecting donations, the 18-foot long moving truck was filled to eight feet, just under halfway full.
"There were so many donations yesterday, it was out of this world," said McDermott "At one point, we had three Hastings Public Schools trucks that were filled to the brim, pallets full of food, and it brought a tear to a lot of folks' eyes thinking about the impact that this food alone is going to have."
McDermott is staying on the Burlington Center rooftop until the truck is completely filled with food donations.
The food drive continues Wednesday until Thursday, with donations accepted in the Burlington Center parking lot from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"One person can't do this, we need everyone to donate."
