GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education will select its newest member on Thursday.

The board is working to replace Katie Mauldin, who resigned her Ward C post in August because she’s moving out of the community. The board will interview the two qualified applicants: Miguel Aguilera and Carlos Barcenas.

According to a news release, Aguilera serves as the Assistant Director of Admissions for the Grand Island Area at Wayne State College. Barcenas is a professional speaker, coach, and facilitator with “I Choose Purple”. He previously served on the school board from 2013-2022.

The board will start its regular meeting at 4:30 on Thursday. The board will then interview the two candidates and engage in discussion. After discussion, the board will take a motion and vote on which candidate to appoint.

The qualifications for applicants were: must be a resident of the school district, must reside within Ward C, and must be a qualified registered voter.
