HASTINGS, Neb. — Weather officials are warning of a dangerous heat wave lasting through Monday in central and eastern Nebraska.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the eastern half of the state lasting from midday Saturday to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. 20 counties in southeast Nebraska and north along the Missouri River are in an excessive heat warning for the same time period.

The NWS says heat index values could reach 100 degrees in Central Nebraska on Saturday and could climb as high as 106 in the southeast part of the state. Sunday could see heat index values as high as 112 in the east.

The advisories and warnings only last until Sunday night, but the heat returns on Monday and could bring temperatures back to 100 degrees.

Officials encourage people to be prepared for the heat and plan to have ways to cool off. They urge people to limit exposure outside during the afternoon and to drink plenty of water.
