GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The largest hospital in Grand Island is turning to the leader of a four-hospital region in Kansas City as its new president.

CHI Health St. Francis announced Steve Schieber as its new hospital president on Friday. He will start on May 12. Schieber comes to Nebraska from the Saint Luke’s Health System, in which he served as Chief Executive Officer for a four-hospital critical access region.

“The edifice of St. Francis Hospital is striking but even more impressive is the commitment to excellence I found during my visit,” Schieber said in a statement. “Every member of the St. Francis family I met was excited to provide emphatic care to the Grand Island community as part of a 140-year-old legacy that has touched so many lives. I am honored to be chosen to lead a team that is motivated to provide a faith based ministry of healing for the whole person: mind, body and soul.”

Schieber succeeds Ed Hannon, who served as president of St. Francis for seven years before retiring at the end of January.

“We are excited to welcome Steven to St. Francis,” Vice President of patient care services Kiley Grzywa said. “He already embraces our rich heritage and dedication to improving the health of our region. With more than 25 years in health care leadership, he will do great things for our community and the continuation of our mission to heal all, especially those who are most vulnerable.”

Schieber owns a Master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Medical Practice Executives and the former president of the Missouri Hospital Association (North District).
