Saturday morning update: roads remain closed.
HASTINGS, Neb. — The second blast of winter weather this week is leading to an extended closure of highways in south-central Nebraska.
As of Friday night, the Nebraska Department of Transportation says all highways in Adams and Webster counties are shut down. All but one section of highway is shut down in Clay County and Highway 34 in Hall County is closed.
The closures come after about roughly seven inches of snow fell in the area overnight. That snow piled up on top of an existing later from Monday’s winter storm. Extremely cold temperatures made the new layer of snow extra dry, making it more susceptible to blowing around. Authorities say that has led to poor visibility and large drifts on area highways. The Webster County Sheriff posted on social media that dangerous conditions caused county plows to return home at 6:00 Friday night.
The region remains in a winter storm warning until 6:00 p.m. Saturday and is in a Wind Chill Warning until noon on Tuesday.
