HASTINGS, Neb. — As Nebraska plunges into winter, the National Weather Service is reviewing snow totals from last season.

The NWS published its 2022-2023 snowfall analysis this week. The maps it released show vast differences from the western part of the state to the eastern.

The Nebraska panhandle and areas near the South Dakota border were pummeled with snow last season. Chadron collected 86.6 inches, which is more than seven feet of snow. Valentine registered nearly 66 inches. Cities in the central region ranged from 28 to 40 inches. The southeast quadrant of the state was much more dry, with Lincoln and Omaha each receiving about 14 inches.

The north and west sections of the state are used to getting more snow than the southeast, but last season’s snow gap was far more pronounced than normal. Chadron received three feet more of snow than typical. Omaha was 13 inches below its typical amount. Cities in the central region like Hastings and Ord received around the normal amount.

Specific to the NWS Hastings coverage area, Holdrege had the highest snow total at 36 inches. Hubbell, which is in Thayer County, had the lowest snow total at 11.7 inches. Kearney saw one of the greatest year-to-year changes in snowfall. It received 32.7 inches, which is 24.4 inches more than the 8.3 inches it received the previous season.

Snow totals last season dropped dramatically once you crossed the Kansas border. Cawker City, which is 45 miles south of Red Cloud, received just 1.8 inches — its least-snowy season on record.

Most of Nebraska has seen its first snow for this season, but the state is still awaiting its first large snow storm.
