GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A central Nebraska nonprofit organization is asking the community for toy donations.
The Heartland United Way said that due to overwhelming demand this year, it has a need for toy donations to distribute at its annual Toys for Tots event.
President Karen Rathke said even though this is the first year they are low for toys, the community has shown up.
“We’re really grateful that so many people just really understand the great need there is right now for children in the community to just have that gift of hope at Christmas," said Rathke.
The Toys for Tots event, which has been happening for the last 26 years, benefits between 2,500 and 3,000 children. The toys are given to children from newborns to 12 years of age.
Toys can be dropped off at the Heartland United Way office until Thursday.
