GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A principal in Grand Island is resigning from his position pending the school finds an adequate replacement.
Gates Elementary Principal Steve Helgeland shared that he intends to resign from his position pending a replacement.
Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS) said they are sad to see him go, but are grateful for the service and expertise he has brought to Gates in his short tenure with the district.
Helgeland started at Gates as principal in July 2023. He plans to move closer to his family in another state.
GIPS said that out of respect for the students, families, and staff Helgeland shared that he was intending to resign early in the year so it would give ample time for the district to find the right person to take over.
In the meantime, Helgeland said he will remain committed to the job and mission of supporting every student and their learning experience.
GIPS said they intend to list the principal position next week. They plan to look internally and externally for candidates who may be interested in the position.
"Our goal in making this change is to provide support for our students an staff at Gates, as well as supporting Mr. Helgeland," said Matt Fisher, GIP Superintendent. "We appreciate Helgeland's willingness to work with the district to best utilize his talents and to provide the best learning opportunities for our students."
GIPS said they will provide more updates on the process as things progress.
