KEARNEY, Neb. — The Kearney Canal is empty this week as crews make repairs.

Nebraska Public Power District says workers emptied the water in the canal system on Saturday to allow for maintenance. The repairs come after NPPD identified a small leak on a bank of the canal during an inspection.

If work goes as planned, officials say the job will be completed at the end of the week and the canal will be refilled to normal levels.

The Kearney Canal is used for irrigation and feeds into the Kearney Hydro, a 1-megawatt hydro generation facility located near 15th Avenue and University Drive.
