South Dakota man headed to trial for Fonner Park murder

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The case against a suspect accused of killing a Fonner Park horse trainer is headed to trial court in Hall County.
Twenty-year-old Logan Hunts Horse is charged with murder, felony robbery and three counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony.
Grand Island Police arrested Hunts Horse last month after the body of 62-year-old Todd Scherer was found in a horse barn on the Fonner Park grounds. He had been shot in the stomach and suffered a large cut to his head.
During a probable cause hearing Tuesday afternoon in Hall County Court, Grand Island Police Investigator Bryce Collamore testified about the case and detailed the time-line leading to Scherer’s death.
Collamore said earlier in the evening of March 10, Hunts Horse contacted Austin Kelly and Lane Harris threatening to harm himself. Kelly and Harris went to Fonner Park and were able to talk Hunts Horse out of harming himself. Collamore then testified that Scherer was present in a room with Hunts Horse and Hunts Horse’s girlfriend Logan Ritz. Kelly and Harris were also in the room.
A short time later Scherer left the room and Hunts Horse followed him. The other three followed Hunts Horse and heard a loud bang coming from Scherer’s tack room at the horse barn.
Collamore said all four then went to the south Walmart in Grand Island where they talked about taking money from Scherer’s wallet. Hunts Horse, Kelly and Ritz returned to Fonner Park, while Harris stayed behind at Walmart.
Hunts Horse and Kelly returned to Scherer’s tack room. Collamore said that’s when Hunts Horse struck Scherer with a baseball bat.
Collamore further testified that another worker later found Scherer’s body in the tack room with his pants and underwear pulled down.
Police later recovered a hand gun believed to be used in the shooting and the baseball bat.
Collamore also testified about a security video on which an eyewitness can be heard saying Hunts Horse had shot someone.
The judge presiding over the probable cause hearing Tuesday transferred the case to Hall County District Court. An arraignment hearing is scheduled May 2. During an arraignment hearing, a suspect typically pleads guilty or not guilty to the charges faced.
Also Tuesday, Kelly pleaded not guilty to felony robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and two counts of accessory to a felony. Kelly will go on trial for those charges in August.
