KEARNEY, NE — Central Community College Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts students are working to earn their degrees, at "Degrees."
CCC debuted its appropriately named food truck on Tuesday at the school’s Kearney Center. Sophomore Ariel Willems is one of the first students to man the truck.
“It’s really cool because I’ve never worked in a food truck before," Willems said. "We have our restaurant at CCC, but actually doing it on the food truck, that’s a whole new experience.”
Program Director Lindsay Higel and fellow student Josie Tweton joined Willems inside Degrees. Higel coached the workers through the tight confines and lunch rush to serve free street tacos to the first 100 staffers and students in Kearney.
“Once you go through your very first rush of people, then it’s time to reset and decide what needs to be rearranged a little better,” Higel said.
Willems labored in advance to get things ready for the truck’s first day.
“Yesterday we did a lot of prep work getting all the meat ready, getting all the guacamole and that stuff done," Willems said. "Then, when we came today, we got everything in little portion cups. That way it makes it a lot easier when people come and we can do a line and serve them.”
"Degrees" is offering free street tacos from 11:00-1:00 at the Grand Island Campus on April 12; the Hastings Campus on April 22; and the Columbus Campus on April 27.
