Boone Central opens the season with convincing win over Norfolk Catholic

NORFOLK - The 2021 high school football season opened up on Thursday night with a battle between two of the region's biggest rivals, Norfolk Catholic and Boone Central.

In last season's matchup, the Knights from Norfolk Catholic came out on top against the Boone Central Cardinals, 21-14. But that wasn't the case on Thursday night. 

The Cardinals ran away with the victory against the Knights, winning by a three-touchdown margin, with a final score of 39-17.

The Cardinal offense was led by great quarterback play from senior Braden Benes, who accounted for 73 yards on the ground and 143 yards in the air with three total touchdowns. Other key players for Boone Central included Parker Borer who chipped in a big 93-yard touchdown run and Cody Maricle, who finished the scoring off with a long touchdown of his own.

Through the air, Carsten Bird came up big for the Cardinals, flying down the field on multiple occasions and snaring passes to help put his team in the best position to win. His biggest play came at the end of the first half, where he reeled in a 29-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone to help increase the Cardinal's lead before the half.

For Norfolk Catholic, sophomore Carter Janssen proved to be the right piece under center for the Knights, dashing for over 75 yards which included a big touchdown to bring his team within eight points in the second half. He also managed to complete some nice passes in the loss as well.

Boone Central will look to go 2-0 next week when they open things up at home against Minden. For Norfolk Catholic, they will travel to Ord on Friday and look to even up their record at 1-1.
