No classes at Chadron State for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

     Chadron State College has cancelled classes on Monday allow students to take part in events recognizing Martin Luther King Jr Day.

       Morning sessions in the Student Center Ballroom include a 10:00 discussion led by Dr. Kurt Kinbacher on the history of protest under the U-S Constitution, and an 11:00 talk by CSC Professor Dr Justin Curtis, co-advisor to the CSC Social Science Club, about the Evolution of the Black Lives Matter Movement.

       One of the MLK Day traditions at Chadron State is a peaceful march from downtown to the campus, and this year’s will leave 3rd and Main at 12:30 and end at the Lindeken Clock Tower. The public is encouraged to join the march, which will have all participants wearing masks. 

         After the march, the movie “Fruitvale Station” will be shown in the Student Center Ballroom at 1:30. The move is based on the 2009 killing in Oakland, Calif, of a 22-year old Black man by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on the platform to BART’s Fruitvale Station.

        Social Science Club President Laura Clay says the hope is that the film will spark conversations related to current issues, that people will gain a better understanding of these issues, and that the entire day’s events will prompt change on the CSC campus and beyond.
