(Peru, Neb.) – The first ball was rolled and the newest Peru State athletic program began on Saturday at the Mockingbird Lanes in Omaha.
The Bobcats were competing in Hammer Open hosted by Midland University. It is a two-day competition where teams bowl a total of six games and then do four sets of four Baker games the next day.
Peru State actually had two mixed doubles teams rather than the traditional men's and women's for their first tournament. Because of being a mixed doubles team, both teams are competing in the men's division.
William Penn (Iowa) varsity led after the individual round bowling with a total of 5,805 pins. The other men's team placings after day one were: second – Hastings varsity – 5,790; third – Midland varsity – 5,566; fourth – Hastings junior varsity – 5,370; fifth – Midland Navy – 5,138; sixth – William Penn junior varsity – 5,071; seventh – Hastings junior varsity 2 – 5,061; eighth – Midland Orange – 5,300, ninth – Peru State varsity – 4,676; and tenth – Peru State #2 – 3,600.
The individual leaders on the Peru State varsity team were: Theo Straube (Lincoln) – 1,039 (six games) – 25th best in the men's on Saturday; Kassidy Haberman (Sioux Falls, S.D.) – 937 (six games) – 34th; McKinley Cross (Buhler, Kan.) – 893 – 38th; Michael Anderson (Cairo) – 820 (five games) – 42nd; Alexxander Uecker (Hastings) – 744 – 44th; and Alex Chmelka (Lincoln) – 243 – 54th.
A Hastings bowler Abby Dallegge was part of the Peru State #2 team and led the group with 740 pins – good for 45th. The Bobcats on the team were: Alyiah Franco (Syracuse, Utah) – 615 – 47th; Annessa Crowell (Ravenna) – 611 – 48th; Austin Guhde-Egger (Auburn) – 553 – 49th; Mason Clobes (Seward) – 552 – 50th; and Alena Montoya (Lakewood, Colo.) – 529 – 51st. All of the bowlers in the second group each bowled five games.
Had Haberman and Cross been competing against the women, they would have been 17th and 26th in the individual standings.
