Goodwill of Omaha has a new feather in its hat, nearly three years after scandal roared through the organization.
According to the charity, it has been voted first place in the “Best Thrift Store” category by Omaha Magazine.
The announcement comes as Goodwill continues to rebuild its damaged image.
In 2016 it was revealed that the company’s top executives' high salaries were cutting into the profits of its Omaha thrift stores.
An investigation by the Omaha World-Herald revealed that the money going to those top jobs left fewer dollars for programs designed to help the disabled and needy job-seekers.
The scandal resulted in, among other things, the resignation of Goodwill C-E-O Frank McGree, who had led the charity for nearly 30 years.
Following McGree’s departure Goodwill set out to restructure management and make other changes necessary to rebuild the public’s trust.
A spokesperson for the charity is thanking Omaha Magazine’s voters for their support, noting that the charity has worked hard to sell more donated goods in order to re-invest more money into the community.
