Norfolk, Neb. -- In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Special Olympic athletes in Norfolk are collaborating with Viareo Wireless to drive positive change and promote health through the power of sports.

This dynamic partnership is not just about raising funds; it's about building a more inclusive community and spreading awareness.

The athletes have taken the lead in selling raffle tickets, igniting a spark of enthusiasm and determination.

The goal? To expand local games and opportunities for athletes to participate in a wider range of sports. Currently, Norfolk Special Olympics boasts a thriving bowling team with over 85 members and a dedicated swim team of five. Excitingly, on November 13th, a representative from the Nebraska state office will visit Norfolk to explore the possibility of introducing softball, bocci ball, corn hole, and golf to the program.

For those eager to support this cause, raffle tickets are available for just $5 each, or a book of five for $20. The prizes are truly enticing, with the first prize being two season tickets to Nebraska football, the second a $500 Amazon gift card, and the third a 50-inch HD TV.

Ruth Markhofer, the head of delegation for Norfolk Area’s Nebraska Special Olympics, emphasizes that the funds raised go beyond uniforms and equipment. They also support a special fall banquet to honor bowlers of the year, swimmer achievements, dedicated coaches, volunteers, and staff.

Markhofer highlights the athletes' perspective: "To them, it's not about money. It's really a friend raiser and an awareness of the community of how widespread we are." This initiative is fostering a growing understanding within the community that the Special Olympics athletes are a vital and joyful part of Norfolk.
