KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney teenager is facing charges after police say the boy brought an air pistol onto school grounds.

A city news release says juvenile probation officers requested assistance from a Kearney Police school resource officer at Kearney High around 2:00 Thursday afternoon. The officer responded and found three students in a car in the school parking lot. According to the release, school staff searched the vehicle and found an air pistol, which they say looked like a realistic Glock 17 handgun. Staff also found several vaping devices.

Authorities charged a 16-year-old boy with possession of a firearm on school property and a 15-year-old boy with resisting arrest. They also charged those two and another 16-year-old boy with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Juvenile probation officers are coordinating the services for the teens. The release says there is no indication there was ever a safety threat for the school.
