GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A Grand Island Utilities worker survived being electrocuted thanks the the response of his fellow lineworkers.
A city news release says it happened around 10:30 Tuesday morning. The worker was on a power pole in the 3900 block of Mary Lane in the southwest edge of town. The worker was unconscious, not breathing and suffering from cardiac arrest after being electrocuted.
The release says that’s when the man’s fellow lineworkers jumped into action. They conducted a pole rescue, began CPR and applied an AED. The efforts of the GIUD team helped restore the lineworker’s heartbeat moments before first responders arrived on scene.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene within minutes and found the worker stable and breathing. They initiated life-stabilizing measures and transported the man to a local hospital.
“The reason the outcome was as good as it was, is because our system worked as expected from the dispatchers to the lineworkers advanced training to the fire department’s rapid response and the advanced care provided by Grand Island Regional,” Fire Chief Cory Schmidt said in a statement. “The real heroes here are those lineworkers who did an amazing job in such an emotional situation.”
City officials are not releasing the lineworker’s name at the request of his family.
