KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Children's Nebraska organization opened a new mental health facility for children in Kearney.

The new facility was introduced on Monday around 3 p.m. to provide care for the youth experiencing depression, anxiety and behavioral health challenges.

According to Children's Nebraska, one-third of Nebraska counties do not have behavioral health providers, and this new clinic is the start of providing aid for the youth.

Renee Rafferty, senior vice president of Children's Nebraska, said this is the first step to making the youth better and safer.

“We’re increasing access to care for youth and families, we know nationwide over 20% of youth are experiencing behavioral health diagnose conditions, and prevent youth from struggling and ensure that they get that care right away and that’s what we’re doing by expanding in the central Nebraska area,” said Rafferty.

Rhonda Johnson is the co-founder of McKenna’s Rae of Hope Foundation. It’s a nonprofit she created following the death of daughter by suicide to raise awareness but also help with resources to those looking for help.

She said this urgent care is a great way to see somebody and then determine what is the next step.

”We are a platform for education and knowledge and this just one more piece, this just more piece this just one more resource,” Johnson added.

She said it doesn’t matter how miniscule you think the situation is it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a professional talk to them and get to the root of it.

This new facility is the first walk-in clinic of its kind in Nebraska, officially opening this summer.

If you or someone you know are struggling, you can speak to someone by calling 9-8-8.
