KEARNEY, Neb. — Law enforcement and school officials in Kearney are assuring people that rumors of threats circulating on social media are not about Kearney Public Schools.

The school district and the Kearney Police Department issued news releases dispelling the rumors on Thursday morning. Police say officers investigated rumors from Tik Tok and found no credible threat to KPS. The release says the rumors are in regards to nationwide events and the Omaha area.

“We want to assure our community that these rumors have been thoroughly investigated by KPD and found to be unsubstantiated,” police said in the release.

KPS sent the following message to parents.

“Kearney Public Schools administration is aware of reports circulating about threats shared via TikTok and Snapchat late last night. According to the Kearney Police Department, these threats reference events nationwide and are unrelated to our schools in Kearney.  We wanted to be sure to stop any rumors right away.

While these reports are not related to our district, we want to remind our students about the importance of reporting any threats they may hear from their peers, even if they seem like a joke. Reporting these concerns, no matter how small, can make a significant difference.
