Duncan Field begins conversion from baseball to football field
HASTINGS, Neb. – One of the biggest baseball fields in the state is once again being converted to host high school football games this fall.
Duncan Field is a tough place to play if you’re a baseball player. But for football players, it’s the perfect place to spend each Friday night.
"It's a great field, I wish I could've played out here in high school if we would've had this nice of a field to play on," said Hastings Parks and Recreation Superintendent Terry Brown. "I'm proud of it. I think it's one of the better parks around the country."
The vast bluegrass outfield is the home to the Hastings St. Cecilia Bluehawks football team, who don’t have their own field.
The outfield is large enough where an entire 100-yard long and 53.3-yard wide football field can fit solely on the outfield grass without encroaching on the turf infield, unlike some professional baseball stadiums which also occasionally host football games.
"It's like 'Do you like landing in gravel or do you like landing in grass?' It's going to be a lot softer on the grass side." said Brown.
Hastings Parks and Recreation curates the field each year after the summer baseball season which is a project Superintendent Terry Brown looks forward to each year.
"It takes a little manpower to get it all up and down, but when we get done, the results are pretty nice to show," said Brown. "Just like when we do the baseball, we stripe it up and make it look pretty, we're doing the same thing for football."
Since the bluegrass is already there year-round, mowing the grass, putting up goalposts, painting lines, adding bleachers and the ‘The Coop’ or the press box, are added to make one of the largest baseball fields in the state have a use for the fall season.
Hastings St. Cecilia's home opener is on Friday Aug. 30 at Duncan Field vs. Grand Island Central Catholic.
