GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Two men connected to a 2023 murder at Fonner Park learned their sentences on Wednesday.

Judge Andrew Butler sentenced 18-year-old Austin Kelly to 18-38 years in prison for his conspiracy to commit robbery conviction.

In a separate hearing, Judge Ryan Carson sentenced 18-year-old Lane Harris to 90 days in jail and four years probation for his aiding consummation of a felony conviction.

The case dates back to March 2023. 21-year-old Logan Hunts Horse admitted to investigators that he shot 62-year-old horse trainer Todd Scherer in the stomach. Kelly and Harris were in the area at the time but left the scene. The group later returned to the scene. Authorities say Hunts Horse and Kelly found Scherer still alive and one of them bashed his head with a baseball bat. Kelly took Scherer’s wallet and the group split the money.

Two weeks earlier, a judge sentenced Hunts Horse to 88-134 years in prison for second-degree murder and a weapons violation.
