Hastings Christian School opens doors for inaugural school year
HASTINGS, Neb. – The newest K-12 school in Hastings is open and welcoming students for the first day of classes Tuesday morning.
Hastings Christian School held its convocation ceremony and open house Monday at its new location in the old YMCA building on 18th St.
The building is owned by Grace Life Church, which is renting the space to HCS.
The school has four classrooms, a large multipurpose room, and one other smaller multipurpose room in the connected space directly to the west of the church.
Four full-time teachers, and several part-time staff are employed for the 2024-25 school year.
HCS says 30 students are enrolled for its inaugural school year who will come to school only three days a week from Tuesday through Thursday.
Mondays and Fridays are seen as 'enrichment' days when kids will not be in school, and are free to do other activities on their own accord.
HCS Board Member President Chad Haygood says students will still get a quality education even with the short school week.
"On Mondays and Fridays, if they want to be involved with other things, if they want to learn music, or take in sports, they have those flex days to do that," said Haygood. "They will be going home on Thursday with a little extra homework load that they'll carry over on Friday over the weekend, and into Monday as well."
Haygood says the school is focused on providing a 'classic Christian education' and will offer subjects such as math, science, literature, history, bible, Latin, music, and physical education.
"Those core classes are going to be rigorous, but also fruitful in the education that we're offering," said Haygood. "We are extremely confident in the education that we're offering."
The school won’t be accredited in its first year, but is working on a Christian accreditation.
In-person classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday.
Even though classes have begun, the school is still open to prospective students looking to join during this school year.
