HASTINGS, Neb. – The Hastings Sodbusters collegiate wood bat team's season came to an end Sunday after accomplishing more than any other team before them.

It took until the final game of the regular season to decide their postseason fate, but a Hastings 6-5 loss to the Nebraska Prospects, and a Fremont Moo win saw the Sodbusters finish one game behind Fremont for a postseason berth.

In their 7th season as a franchise, the Sodbusters won 9 of their last 11 games to finish with a team-best 32-20 record.

The team experienced a setback on June 28, one month into the season, when Head Coach Joel Schipper announced his resignation from his positions at Hastings College and the Sodbusters to take a coaching job in his hometown of Grand Rapids, MI.

22-year-old Assistant Coach Danny Wisor was promoted to head coach a week later and led the team to an 11-8 finish from July 8.

The 32-20 record this season is the second winning season in Sodbuster history, and the best finish since the team went 28-23 in 2020.

The Fremont Moo will take on the Casper Spuds in a best-of-five game series starting Tuesday for the 2024 Independence League Championship.
