HASTINGS, Neb. — Forecasters say a heat wave is set to arrive in Central Nebraska late this weekend and last into next week.

The National Weather Service says dangerous heat could start as soon as Sunday. Early forecasts say heat index values could reach 100 degrees every day from Sunday to Thursday. Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be the warmest days.

The NWS says we are climatologically past the average hottest day of the year, but that doesn’t mean the summer is over.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for part of the state on Friday, indicating high fire risk because of low humidity and high winds. The NWS hasn’t issued any heat-related advisories yet, but those could come over the weekend.
