Axtell boys claim fourth track and field state title in program history
OMAHA, Neb. — The Axtell boys track and field team used a deep roster to tie for the Class D state championship.
The Wildcats scored 56 team points and tied with McCool Junction. The championship is the fourth in program history. The Wildcats previously won in 2006, 2018 and 2019.
“Axtell is synonymous with track and field. We have tremendous community support,” Axtell coach Eric Havranek said. “The one thing we want to do is bring a trophy home for the community of Axtell.”
The team title came down to the final event. Axtell entered with a seven point lead. McCool Junction won the 4x400 M relay to earn 10 points and Axtell placed sixth to earn three points, creating the tie.
“That was definitely stressful but we believe in our kids,” Havranek said. “I knew that they wouldn’t waiver and that they would seal the deal and they did exactly that.”
Axtell won the title despite having just one individual gold medalist. Luc Lopez and Keyton Cole finished first and second in the 800M run.
