GRAND ISLAND, Neb.- - A mom is now in jail after police said she failed to help her toddler receive lifesaving medical care.

According to Grand Island Police, officers responded to a welfare check on a two-year-old boy on Sunday. Officers were told by staff from CHI Health St. Francis that the boy was supposed to have been transported to Nebraska Medical Center on Sunday morning.

Hospital staff said the boy had a severe infection in his blood that was potentially life threatening and needed immediate medical attention. Hospital staff said the boy's mother, Stephanie Hatcher, refused to let St. Francis transport the boy to Omaha via ambulance and said she would take him herself. When police responded to the welfare call, they found she never took her son for more care.

According to police, Hatcher said she had car troubles and was doing laundry.

Hatcher was arrested and charged with intentional child abuse. Our news partners KSNB Local 4 report the child was transferred into DHHS custody and flown by medical helicopter to Omaha. There is no condition listed for the child.
