Listen to Flinn and Creech on the March 12 Doug & Daddy Show

HASTINGS, Neb. — It’s a new era for Hastings High hoops.

The Class B school announced Monday that it hired Dylan Flinn as boys basketball coach and Lance Creech as girls basketball coach. The two new head coaches have a shared background. Flinn played for Creech when the latter was the head boys coach at Hastings College.

Flinn says it’s a benefit to have a trusted colleague beside him for his first head coaching job.

“That familiarity will be great to be able to chat with him, bounce ideas off each other, just try to build both the girls and the boys programs,” Flinn said.

Flinn has previously been an assistant coach at Hastings St. Cecilia and for the Tigers.

Creech moved from Hastings College to the Hastings High boys coaching job before stepping down to follow his son’s college basketball career at Northern Colorado. He says it was his kids who encouraged him to get back into coaching.

“My youngest one, Connor, said, ‘dad I appreciate you wanting to have some flexibility and follow me around, but all our games are on TV so you can watch them the next day… so go do what you do and go be a coach again,'” Creech said.

Flinn takes over for Drew Danielson, who is moving to Kearney to become head girls coach. Creech replaces Liz Vanderpool, who stepped down after two seasons.
