GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- The Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island is looking to the future.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Hall County Airport Authority Board approved the Airport Capital Improvement Plan. The plan addresses short-term and intermediate-term improvements as well as other projects.

One project in the 'other' category is expansion of the terminal. Director Mike Olson said the project is in the planning stages and he would like to start the design process next year.

He said the original terminal was designed for smaller aircraft. Now, Allegiant and American's larger aircraft can make things crowded, especially if both airlines are on the ground at the same time.

“Yeah we would like, due to capacity constraints. We would like to do some expansion not that we would like to. It’s we need to,” Olson said.

The project’s price tag is $7,000,000 and there is no specific timeline for its completion.

But that isn’t the only project in the works. Over the next two years, the airport will acquire $5.6 million-worth of snow removal equipment. The airport will do $1.35 million of concrete repairs this year.

The improvement plan lists a $35 million runway reconstruction project slated for 2031 and 2032. A new $8 million air traffic control tower is included for some time before 2033.
