HASTINGS, Neb. — How cold have the first two weeks of 2024 been?

The National Weather Service says the Hastings and Grand Island weather stations have set six new records for cold temperatures, which is more than they set in all of 2023.

The most recent records are for coldest high temperatures on Sunday. Grand Island registered a high temperature of -3 degrees and Hastings checked in at -2, both of which were at least four degrees colder than the previous record for January 14.

Wind chill values are making the extremely cold temperatures feel even colder. On Saturday, eight locations in the NWS Hastings coverage area reported wind chills of -40 or below. Ord was the coldest, reporting a wind chill of -46 at 9:45 a.m.

A Wind Chill Warning will expire at noon on Tuesday, but the current cold snap is expected to continue into the weekend. The NWS says wind chill values will rise into the teens on Wednesday and then plummet back to below -20 by Friday.
