KEARNEY, Neb. — Everyone is safe but a house is severely damaged after a Wednesday morning fire in Kearney.

Firefighters responded around 9:00 to a house near the intersection of 1st St. and Central Ave., which is right next to the Kearney exit off of Interstate 80. Initial reports say a person was inside when the fire started but was able to evacuate safely.

A news release says firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the house when they arrived. Crews quickly contained the fire and confirmed nobody was inside. The release says two rooms sustained extensive fire damage and the whole house sustained heavy smoke damage.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire but believe it was an accident.
