Karmazin, Petersen wrap up Nebraska Junior Amateur titles
HASTINGS, Neb. -- Julia Karmazin and Beau Petersen entered the final round of the Nebraska Junior Amateur Championships with the leads in their respective fields, and neither relinquished their grips on the top spots.
Karmzin was a wire-to-wire winner on the girls side, finishing the 54-hole event at 10-over par after a 5-over 77 on Wednesday.
She started off the event with a blistering 73 on Monday and never lost her spot at the top of the leaderboard.
The soon-to-be-senior at Elkhorn North finished the championship three shots ahead of Omaha's Madison Murnan.
It was the first title for Karmazin, who had finished in the top 10 the previous three years.
Petersen, who moved into the lead in the boys race Tuesday with a scorching 4-under 68, held off a late charge from defending champion Trevor Gutschewski to claim the title.
Petersen shot a 1-over 73 on Wednesday to finish at 5-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Gutschewski.
Gutschewski shot a final round 69, as he improved his score each day, but it wasn't enough to catch the fast-starting Petersen, who will be a senior at Gretna this fall.
Gutschewski was aiming to become just the third back-to-back champion in tournament history, and the first since Alex Schaake won three straight from 2014 to 2016.
