KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney man is behind bars after police say he assaulted a University of Nebraska-Kearney football player.

A criminal complaint says authorities arrested 19-year-old Marvin Zuniga on Thursday for second-degree assault. The document says Zuniga used a dangerous instrument to intentionally harm a member of the UNK football team, whose name we are withholding.

Kearney Police Lieutenant Derek Luke says the arrest is related to violence that occurred at a party near campus early on the morning of Sunday, May 14th but is not for the reported stabbing or shooting. He says this alleged assault happened at the same time or within minutes of the stabbing and gunshots.

Luke says Kearney Police are still reviewing other leads and analyzing forensic and digital evidence from the incident. KPD previously reported arresting two 17-year-olds and a 26-year-old related to the violence but didn’t release any names.

There were two more reports of shots fired near the UNK campus over a four-day stretch following the incident. Nobody has been hit by any of the gun shots.

Zuniga appeared in Buffalo County Court for an arraignment on Friday morning. A judge set his bond at $10,000 cash with conditions that have no contact with the victim or the victim's residence. Zuniga is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on June 28.
