LINCOLN, Neb. — A Hastings man is being honored with the top annual award given by History Nebraska.
The organization announced Tuesday that Richard “Dick” Witt is one of two winners of the 2023 Champion of History Award. The award is part of an effort to recognize “people that provide significant contributions to the preservation and interpretation of Nebraska history.”
Here is the excerpt provided by History Nebraska in a news release:
“For years, Richard has been the driving force behind much of the written history from Adams County. He has devoted countless and selfless volunteer hours promoting the county’s local history. Richard has served on the Board of Directors for the Adams County Historical Society since 1988, including serving as secretary for many years. During his tenure, he began editing the organization’s publication, “Historical News”. While his name does not appear as the editor of the publication, Richard reviews and selects all the articles. His editing skills have driven the success of the publication. Alongside his editorial duties, Richard works with other volunteers, assists with technology issues, and helps with History Day competitions.”
Witt will receive the award during a special legislative event on Wednesday at the Nebraska History Museum. Sen. Steve Halloran of Hastings will present the award.
