GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A Hastings man was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop in Grand Island Wednesday night.

The Nebraska State Patrol said that around 7 p.m., a trooper saw a Chevrolet Silverado speeding on Highway 34, just north of the 1-80 interchange in Grand Island.

NSP said that during the traffic stop, a passenger fled on foot by jumping over a fence and running toward the Platte River.

There were additional troopers that drove to the scene. After about 90 minutes, NSP said a trooper saw the person, 30-year-old Miguel Lopez, crawling across the south channel of the Platte River.

Lopez was taken into custody without further incident.

Troopers said they found out that the passenger had given false identification through a debit card during the initial traffic stop.

Lopez was arrested for criminal impersonation, obstructing a police officer, and criminal possession of a financial transaction device.

He was lodged in the Hall County Jail.

NSP said their K9 Division and drone operators helped with this search.
