GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A major road construction project in Grand Island is in its final stages.

According to the City's Public Works Department, the North Road Paving Improvement Project from Old Potash Highway to 13th St. started its final phase on Monday.

City Officials said North Road is now closed to through traffic from Faidley Avenue to 13th St. for intersection, driveway and sidewalk construction. Officials expect it to reopen by the end of April.

The North Road project includes reconstruction from Old Potash Highway to 13th St. The project has removed the 24-foot-wide asphalt roadway and constructed a concrete curb and gutter, three-lane, 41-foot-wide roadway section. It also includes stem sewer construction, bike trail and sidewalk improvements and water main adjustments.

Elsbury Construction is in charge of construction with a roughly $2.66 million contract.
