NPPD planning new transmission line in Kearney, seeking public input
Nebraska Public Power District is making plans to build a new transmission line to serve Kearney.
KEARNEY, NE — Nebraska Public Power District is making plans to build a new transmission line to serve Kearney.
NPPD officials presented details about the Kearney Power Project to the county board and city council on Tuesday. The new line will carry 115,000 volts between the Tower substation in west Kearney, and the TechOne substation on the east side. Transmission Line Design Engineer Jason Hofer says the project is needed because of Kearney’s rapid growth.
“It provides an additional path for the load at either one of (the substations). Instead of two paths going north or south, you now have a third path that the power can flow into," Hofer said. "Also, if a line falls down in the north, you have now two connected paths instead of one hanging out the end.”
Hofer says the new transmission line will improve capacity, operational flexibility, reliability and resiliency.
NPPD is looking at multiple routes to run the line. Officials are holding a series of open house events starting September 29th to get input from landowners. The utility plans to start construction in late 2024 and finish in spring or summer 2025.
