KEARNEY, NE — Tennis players in the Kearney area now have a new facility to use.

The Kearney Park and Recreation Department is opening the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center on Monday. The tennis center spans 62,000 square feet, features six indoor courts, offers a mezzanine viewing area and houses the Park and Recreation Department offices. The facility is open to the public and will also serve as the home of the UNK Women’s Tennis team. The tennis center will have a small pro shop, racquet stringing serve and racquet rental service.

The city will use an online system called CourtReserve to schedule court reservations. Prices vary according to court time, but a 60-minute reservation per person with a pass is $3.00 and without a pass is $6.00.

The tennis center is at 1930 University Drive on the south edge of UNK’s campus. Facility hours are Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Friday & Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The tennis center is named after Ernest Grundy, a former UNK professor who helped start youth tennis programs in Kearney. The venue will be the host site of the 2023 and 2024 ITA Division II Men’s and Women’s National Team Indoor Championships.
