HASTINGS, Neb. -- Storms could be returning to Nebraska this weekend, starting in the Panhandle and north central portions of the state and moving east.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms are expected to begin in early afternoon near Big Springs and moving on a line toward Ainsworth.

NWS says the storms will continue to track east to northeast throughout the evening and into the early Sunday morning hours.

Large hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning remain the primary concerns, NWS officials said Saturday.

The newest round of storms follow a week of consistent rain across Nebraska, but the recent bout of rain comes on the heels of a damaging drought that increased fire risk throughout the state.

After the weekend storms will be an expected heat wave.

The atmosphere is bringing both heat and humidity next week when highs are forecast about 20 degrees above normal. In addition, high humidity will create muggy conditions, something Nebraska hasn't really experienced yet this season due to the previously dry conditions.
