KEARNEY, NE — A fire at a Kearney park is extinguished without causing much damage thanks to quick reaction by firefighters.

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at Yanney Park just before 2:15 Monday afternoon. Chief Jeremy Feusner says a patch of grass was on fire and flames were starting to work into a pergola on the northeast side of the park’s pond when he arrived. Firefighters first doused the structure, then used grass rigs to contain the grass fire and put it out.

It took about 10 minutes to get the blaze under control. Feusner says it helps that the park grass was so short.

Investigators are still working to determine a cause. The fire department encourages people to be extra careful with burning materials because of the dry conditions.
