Kearney preemptively cancels school Tuesday ahead of extreme winter weather

Kearney Public Schools isn’t wasting time in canceling classes ahead of a blast of winter weather.

KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney Public Schools isn’t wasting time in canceling classes ahead of a blast of winter weather.

The district announced Sunday evening that it will be closed on Tuesday. Forecasters expect 1-2 inches of snow to fall overnight into Monday. Then, they predict another 3-5 inches to fall overnight into Tuesday. On top of the snow, wind chills could be as low as -32 at 9:00 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory starting at midnight and lasting until 6:00 p.m. on Monday. An Extreme Cold Watch is set to follow and last through noon on Thursday.

The cancellation on Tuesday will flow into already-scheduled days off for KPS Wednesday-Friday.
