GRAND ISLAND, NE — Charles Herbster is continuing his run for governor with his campaign firmly aligned with the Trump name.
Donald Trump Jr. joined Herbster for a trio of campaign stops on Wednesday, finishing in Grand Island. In front of a crowd of about 300, he thanked Herbster for supporting the Trump family.
“Thank you for the support," Trump said. "Not just now or once my father was president, but when it wasn’t politically expedient.”
Herbster’s alignment with the Trumps extended to slogans. The Falls City rancher parroted the Trump campaign motto, saying he would make Nebraska great again, and laid out his blueprint.
“We have got to revitalize this state with broadband, better roads, better tax system and just make some common, common sense decisions,” Herbster said.
The first items addressed with the crowd were election integrity and education reform, with Herbster saying many Nebraskans prefer trade schools over an “indoctrination” at the University of Nebraska.
“We are going to go back to educating our children reading, writing, arithmetic," Herbster said. "At all levels of education we’re going to get rid of sex education and CRT.”
Herbster touted his background in business and lack of a background in politics, ideas Trump Jr. could get behind. He said that’s the type of person needed to combat Democrats and weak Republicans.
“That’s why you need someone like Charles Herbster that doesn’t owe the establishment," Trump said. "The Republicans, just as bad in many cases. Their superpower is like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory because they roll over every time.”
A tight schedule didn’t allow for interviews with Trump Jr. or Herbster. The Nebraska primary election is on May 10th, less than a month away.
