GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Multiple people were injured when a vehicle collided with a house in central Nebraska late Friday afternoon.

Officials said this incident started at 4:51 pm on Friday, when the suspect vehicle -- a Silver 2008 Mercury Mountaineer (SUV) -- driven by a 17 year old Grand Island male, was driving erratically and struck a White Hyundai from behind near the intersection of 16th Street and Broadwell Ave.

The SUV then fled the scene westbound on 16th Street for several blocks before colliding with a residence after failing to negotiate a turn.

Officials said both the driver and passenger in the vehicle were transported to St. Francis Emergency Room for serious injuries. Their current medical conditions are unknown.

Authorities said the residence sustained serious structural damage.

Captain Jim Duering said that this is an open investigation because there has been no opportunity to interview both vehicle occupants since neither have been available due to medical needs.

No official word has been provided regarding the cause of the accident or the extent of the property damage.
