COLUMBUS, Neb. -- The Columbus community came together on Tuesday night to honor its veterans.

The Columbus American Legion and the Trinity Lutheran Auxiliary presented 30 Quilts of Valor to local veterans. All of the quilts were made by women in the church.

Honored veterans said the recognition honored not just the work of those who served in battle, but the community of those who continue to serve by showing up for veterans' funerals.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group of guys," said Mike Landkamer, who was among those honored. "They're here for military funerals, whether they know the guys or not, just because they're veterans. Could be the middle of the summer when it's hot and the humidity's up there, or could be winter when it's 16-below and there's a minus-30 wind chill."
