Pioneer tennis teams fall short at State

LINCOLN- Nebraska City High School snagged a trio of bracket wins in the doubles matches, but came up empty-handed in singles in the 2021 boy's tennis state tournament.
Eight-seeded Nebraska City senior Caleb Poggemeyer and junior Connor Causgrove started off strong against Brownwell-Talbot/Concordia's Rayaan Sattar and Luke Raymond, winning 6-1, 6-3.
In the second round of the tournament, Poggemeyer and Causgrove met the ninth-seeded pair from Holdrege, Hunter Ness and Jaxson Karn. The Pioneers prevailed in the third set and came away with another win, advancing them into the third round.
In the third round, the two were faced with its toughest challenge yet, the one-seeded McCook team of Evan Humphrey and Nathaniel Miller. McCook got the best of Poggemeyer and Causgrove, winning 6-0, 6-2.
The Pioneer duo found themselves in the consolation bracket for fifth place, in a match-up against Elkhorn North. Elkorn North bested the Pioneers, and Nebraska City moved into the game for seventh place against Lincoln Christian. The Crusader's won the seventh place game 8-2 over the Pioneers.
In the second set of doubles bracket, a second pairing of Pioneers eyed an underdog run. Senior Elijah McNeely and junior Anthony Robinson came into the tournament as the eleven-seed in bracket play. Their first round match against South Sioux City ended in a Pioneer win 6-2, 6-0.
For the second time, however, the Pioneers were matched up with a higher seeded McCook. The eleven-seeded Pioneers fought, but fell 6-4, 6-4 to McCook.
In singles bracket, senior Keno Schuldt lost in the opening round to ten-seeded Kade Schrock from Kearney Central, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Brayden Thornton also lost in the opening round 6-0, 6-0, to ninth-seeded Jacob Myers from Ralston.
